The Created and Its Creator

A commentary on the art of making.

A Human-Written Article

As I walk through what feels like a never-ending list of to-do’s in launching this website, I’m tempted to neglect sincerity. “It would be so easy,” my sleep-deprived, caffeine-addled brain whispers, “just hand it over to AI… it’ll be done in seconds.”

And so it would, but in a world where children are becoming glass-eyed screen-addicts, and most high-schoolers somersault around basic algebra with ChatGPT, I’ve decided to embrace one of the few joys we have as humans: creating.

Creativity, the art of making, is one of the few ways we clearly emulate our creator. “In the beginning God created” And it was good! The making of something out of nothing, communicating a new idea, sharing what you love with others, is what makes us human. From the invention of the wheel to sliced bread to the technology that holds our humanity between its fingers, we have pursued innovation above all else. How tragically ironic that our innovation will be what ends our ability to innovate.

Every book on the “Modern World” and “Future of AI” describes with gory detail the loss of our creativity; encourages CEOs and world leaders to scrap people for machines, souls for microchips. But what happens when there aren’t leaders to lead the machines any more? When an entire generation is deprived of thinking, learning, growing. When there are no longer masters, because every master was once a beginner.

And perhaps that isn’t the future. AI developers tell grandiose stories of GPT-utopia, where we have time to read, sing, and create. Where we can “get back to what truly matters,” and leave real creation to the machines. But when analyzing that perspective, it’s important to remember the gold-plated bathtubs and red-hot ferraris those men have because of AI. I’d imagine you must tell yourself that you are working towards heaven whilst driving a generation into hell.

This article might not be particularly well-written, but at least it is written. With a human mind and a desire for truth- something a machine will never know.

With luv,

Claire
